Hermès Hardware Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Ladies, we know just how much your Hermès bag(s) means to you — after all, it’s a staple in your wardrobe. Whether it’s choosing from a selection of premium quality leathers to deciding between jaw-dropping colours to the never-ending styles, you’re spoilt for choice.

Thought that was all you need to decide between? We hate to break it to you, but your Hermès hardware is just as important, if not more. We’re sensing some nervous jitters, so settle down, please. We’re about to dish out all the deets.

What’s the Deal with the Hermès Hardware Anyway?

Hardware, contrary to popular belief, is a lot more than just some metal. It gives your handbag character and ties the entire look together. It’s the kind of detail that takes your Birkin from 'nice bag' to “OMG, where did you get that?!”

Hermès Hardware Guide

Imagine candy with rose gold Hermès Kelly hardware. If the thought of that alone didn’t get you blushing, we don’t know what will! The feet, D rings, zippers, clasps, lock, key — basically everything, add sparkle to your bag that would otherwise be pretty plain without them.

There also happens to be a new kid on the block. Check it out!

Can Hermès Hardware Help You Spot a Fake?

The short and sweet answer: yes, yes it can. In fact, the hardware is one of the major giveaways when spotting a phoney purse. Not only is the gold or palladium-plated hardware stamped and engraved, but the words are also crystal clear.

The Hermès font does tend to change over the years. However, one thing remains the same: the words and letters are accurately spaced apart and aren’t fuzzy or blurred like they’d be in a fake. You’ll also find that the lock and key have matching engravings, and the studs at the bottom allow your Hermès bag to stand on its own feet.

Apart from impeccable engraving, the hardware just feels luxurious. We can’t really put a finger to this, and you’d just need to feel authentic Hermès permabrass hardware to understand what we’re getting at. It’s heavy, doesn’t feel cheap, and while it does get scratches over time (brb, crying), the metal doesn’t peel or chip off.

Get to Know Your Hermès Hardware

Hermès hasn’t shied away from using a range of metals that take their bags to the next level. Fair warning: the list of hardware is long and will leave you more confused than ever.

1. Gold Hardware

The gold hardware, frequently referred to as GHW, is a classic. Think of it as the little black dress — we’re basically saying it’s a staple. It used to be played in 24k gold now you will find it crafted from 18k plated gold (this is to keep costs down)

  • Composition: 18k gold plating on brass

  • Finish: Warm yellow-gold, high shine, highly reflective

  • Durability: Shows fine scratches over time, but never peels

  • Best With: Noir, Étoupe, Gold, Rouge H on Birkin and Kelly

  • Weight: Solid brass base, substantial feel

  • Resale: Top demand alongside palladium; classic combinations hold great value

2. Brushed Gold Hardware

If you’re all about that matte life, brushed gold Hermès hardware is the way to go. It’s a muted shade of gold, which you won’t see very often in the collection, given its rarity. Be wary of the fact that scratches are extra prominent on this.

  • Composition: 18k gold plating with directional brushing treatment on brass

  • Finish: Matte satin, subdued gold tone, minimal reflectivity

  • Durability: Scratches are MORE visible on brushed surface

  • Best With: Modern aesthetic on Épsom Birkin/Kelly; rare, mostly special orders

  • Weight: Same as shiny gold; textured surface

  • Resale: Rare, appeals to minimalist collectors; niche market

3. Hermès Rose Gold Hardware

If there was one hardware that we had to choose, it’d be this one. Not only is it the most beautiful shade of pink, thanks to the mixed copper in between the gold, but it’s also incredibly durable. With neutral shades, this is a clear winner.

  • Composition: Palladium plating on brass; code CK; more precious than gold

  • Finish: Bright cool silver-white, highly reflective, no warm tones

  • Durability: MORE scratch-resistant than gold; corrosion-proof; requires less polishing

  • Best With: Rose Shocking, Bleu Électrique, vibrant pinks/blues

  • Weight: Same solid brass base as gold

  • Resale: Equal to gold in demand; modern buyers prefer PHW

4. Hermès Palladium Hardware

‘All that glitters is not gold’, ever heard that? We have, and we agree! Whiter and brighter than plain old silver, the palladium hardware Hermès retails for higher than the GHW. Palladium-plated hardware is, in fact, such a prized possession that only limited-edition Birkin and Kelly bags feature it.

  • Composition: Palladium plating on brass; code CK; more precious than gold

  • Finish: Bright cool silver-white, highly reflective, no warm tones

  • Durability: MORE scratch-resistant than gold; corrosion-proof; requires less polishing

  • Best With: Rose Shocking, Bleu Électrique, vibrant pinks/blues

  • Weight: Same solid brass base as gold

  • Resale: Equal to gold in demand; modern buyers prefer PHW

5. Hermès Permabrass Hardware

Prembrass is what you’d get if gold and palladium had a child. It’s best described as a champagne-type colour that works really well with your darks. It is, however, a custom style, so you’d find it a tad bit difficult to get your hands on it.

  • Composition: Palladium plating with directional brushing on brass

  • Finish: Matte silver-white, subdued contemporary look, minimal reflectivity

  • Durability: Scratches MORE visible than polished; maintains integrity but shows wear patterns

  • Best With: Special orders, modern minimalist aesthetic, structured leathers

  • Weight: Same as shiny palladium; textured feel

  • Resale: Very rare

6. Ruthenium Hardware

Offered mostly on lizard skin, ruthenium is a grunge, almost masculine version of palladium Hermès hardware. It’s one of the most scattered elements on the Earth and is only found in the 2004 - 2007 ‘So Black’ collection.

  • Composition: Brass with champagne-tone plating; sits between gold and palladium

  • Finish: Champagne/pale gold, brilliant sheen, sophisticated middle ground

  • Durability: Durable; scratches less visible than darker metals

  • Best With: Bleu de Prusse, Vert Cyprès, Noir

  • Weight: Standard brass base

  • Resale: Rare custom/special order

7. Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) Hardware

This one’s more of an almost black metal that pairs well if you’re going for a monochromatic look. Previously being one of the most-wanted Kelly and Birkin collectables, PVD is now limited to the Midnight Faubourg Birkin.

  • Composition: Ruthenium, gunmetal grey

  • Finish: Dark gunmetal, edgy masculine aesthetic, moody sophistication

  • Durability: Highly durable; scratches blend into dark surface

  • Best With: So Black Collection (2004-2007) only

  • Weight: Standard brass base

  • Resale: Extremely collectable

8. Lacquer Hardware

You won’t find this in Birkin hardware, since it’s limited to Constance. We’re all too familiar with the iconic ‘H’ clasp, lacquer is used to protect the clasp’s colour and durability.

  • Composition: Advanced PVD coating (vacuum deposition) darkens metal to near-black

  • Finish: Nearly black, monochromatic dramatic aesthetic, ultra-modern

  • Durability: Durable but scratches reveal lighter base

  • Best With: So Black Collection (2004-2007), currently Midnight Faubourg Birkin only

  • Weight: Standard brass base

  • Resale: Among most collectible; So Black highly prized; limited production increases rarity

9. Diamond-Studded Hardware

We left the best for last: 18K white gold, detailed with bedazzled diamonds. It’s one of the most prized hardware (no surprise there) and is for women who are looking to go all out.

  • Composition: Enamel lacquer over metal base (gold or palladium)

  • Finish: Glossy colour coating, can match or contrast leather

  • Durability: Protects from tarnish

  • Best With: Constance 'H' clasp exclusively; coordinates with any leather colour

  • Weight: Minimal added weight

  • Resale: Standard on Constance; special colour combos may add desirability

10. Electrum Hardware

Can’t choose between gold and palladium? Electrum hardware says, “Why not both?” This dreamy two-tone mix gives you gold turn locks and rivets with palladium-plated clasps and plaques — talk about the best of both worlds! It’s effortlessly chic, super versatile, and works with just about any colour.

  • Composition: 18k white gold encrusted with VVS F diamonds; ~10 carats on Birkin 35, ~80g gold

  • Finish: Maximum brilliance

  • Durability: Diamonds extremely durable; requires insurance and professional cleaning

  • Best With: Hermès Himalaya, finest exotic skins only

  • Weight: Significantly heavier (80+ grams of gold plus diamonds)

  • Resale: Sells for hundreds of thousands at auction

11. Guilloché (diamond‑cut) Hardware

Ladies, we’re going to let you in on what seems like Hermès’ best-kept secret: the Guilloché hardware. This is palladium hardware that’s been engraved so finely with a diamond pattern. But you know what makes this hardware so special? It’s incredibly rare.

Back in the good old days, when low-rise jeans and Ashton Kutcher’s trucker hats (that’s 2003 - 2005 for you Gen Alphas) were making it big, the Guilloché hardware first appeared on a Kelly. You know what made this extra special? It was available in gold. GOLD! It did make a brief comeback in 2012-2014, but that was about it.

  • Composition: Two-tone: gold-plated turn locks/rivets, palladium-plated clasps

  • Finish: Mixed warm/cool metals

  • Durability: Combines both metals' properties; gold portions show more scratches

  • Best With: Works with any leather colour

  • Weight: Standard brass base

  • Resale: Rare production

12. Brushed Palladium Hardware

We leave you with one last beauty: Brushed Hardware. This one’s a rare sight, unless of course you’ve gotten it custom-made. It’s the matte version of the palladium hardware, and has that beautiful contemporary finish that tones down all the shine. It’s actually the perfect pick for anyone who finds joy in that understated look.

Just know that scratches will show up a lot more easily on the brushed surface. You can either be super careful with it or just embrace it because that’s your bag and it tells your story.

  • (rarest); 2012-2014 palladium only

  • Finish: Intricate texture, patterned reflectivity

  • Durability: Exceptionally durable; texture hides minor wear beautifully

  • Best With: Stunning with Box Calf

  • Weight: Standard

  • Resale: One of the rarest finishes

Hardware and Bag Model Relationships

Just like jam complements peanut butter, different Hermès models have been traditionally paired with certain hardware. Sure, special orders and seasonal releases can vary, but the crux behind it stays the same.

  • Leave the sticker on (or not, it’s your bag)

FAQ: Hermès Hardware Essentials

What is the difference between GHW and PHW?

Gold Hardware, GHW, is warm and has yellow-gold plating, typically 18-karat. It’s rich and has a lustrous shine. Palladium Hardware, PHW, on the other hand, is a bright, cool-toned silver-white metal. PHW is actually more precious than gold by weight and value, offering a brilliant white shine that's brighter than sterling silver.

Which hardware is most durable?

Palladium's inherent hardness makes it highly scratch-resistant and corrosion-proof. Rose Gold owes its exceptional durability to the copper content in the gold alloy. The copper makes RGHW significantly more resistant to scratches than pure gold plating.

How does hardware impact resale value?

Hardware affects both the demand and pricing in the pre-owned market:

High-Demand Hardware

  • Gold (GHW)

  • Palladium (PHW)

  • Rose Gold (RGHW)

Collectible Hardware

  • Guilloché

  • Ruthenium

  • PVD

  • Diamond
