Why Jean Paul Gaultier's Slouchy Birkin Is Still Fashion's Most Wanted

Luxury handbags are funny sometimes. Some whisper, while others shout on the top of their lungs.

We’re having some trouble fitting the JPG Birkin bag in the right category, however. It’s the sort of piece that doesn’t really need to say anything at all, because the moment it walks into a room, people already know what it is.

When Jean Paul Gaultier was appointed in 2003 as the Hermès Creative Director, the fashion world held their breath. They simply didn’t know what to expect. Can we blame them? No. This was literally the same designer who put Madonna in that cone bra for crying out loud.

Jean Paul Gaultier is the sort of person who’s never quite met a convention he didn’t want to cheerfully demolish.

Hermès, on the other hand, the ‘IT’ girl of the luxury fashion world, the house that has spent not one but two centuries perfecting the art of doing more with less.

What could possibly happen when these two forces collided?

The Hermès shoulder Birkin. That's what happened.

Jean Paul Gaultier's Slouchy Birkin

When Gaultier Met Hermès: A Love Story in Leather Began

We’ll take you back a few years, to 1999. This is when Jean Paul Gaultier sold 35% of his namesake label to Hermès. In the following four years, he became the Creative Director at Hermès.

In the fall of 2004, Jean Paul Gaultier took to the runway, and it was short of extraordinary. He took everything the luxury house stood for, and quite literally, gave it a shake.

Kelly closures appeared on trench coats. The signature Bolduc ribbon danced across dresses. Leather whips swung alongside Jean Paul Gaultier handbags. It was Hermès, but not as anyone had ever seen it.

And then came the bag.

The legendary JPG shoulder Birkin. It was slouchy, rebellious and probably the first take on the most famous handbag in luxury history. While the Birkin stood tall in its structure and poise, the JPG was relaxed, reminding people that you didn’t have to be so stuck up and stiff. The JPG had a shoulder strap, and when we say collectors went absolutely feral for it, we mean it

What Makes the JPG Birkin Bag So Special?

Nobody likes to admit this, but the Jean Paul Gaultier bag solved something nobody was allowed to admit existed.

Yes, the classic Birkin is gorgeous, iconic and the epitome of craftsmanship. But behind all that grandeur, you’ve got to admit that it’s decidedly impractical for modern life. It’s formal and requires commitment, commitment we’re not entirely sure people are willing to make.

The JPG Birkin features a slouchy silhouette that gives it a relaxed, worn-in feeling from day one. No stiffness, only buttery leather that moves with you rather than dictating how you move.

Let’s be honest here, that shoulder strap is absolutely genius. We’re sure Jean Paul Gaultier must have offended a few collectors, but we think secretly, everyone was sort of relieved in their hearts.

You were finally getting a Birkin you could live in.

The sizes ranged from the JPG Shoulder Birkin 42, a generous travel companion, to smaller sizes that kept that slouchy aesthetic going.

The Jean Paul Gaultier purse versions in exotic leathers elevated the slouch. The relaxed structure actually showcased exotic skins beautifully, letting the natural texture shine without that rigid look.

The Gaultier Era Wasn’t Limited to Just One Bag

Sure, you might know Jean Paul Gaultier for his Hermès shoulder Birkin but that doesn’t mean he didn’t do other amazing things during his time.

For starters, he introduced the Kelly Pochette in that same debut 2004 collection. It was a clutch that's now a permanent part of the Hermès collection. The 25cm Birkin arrived, eventually overtaking the once-standard 35cm as the most sought-after size.

Then, he came up with the Medor clutch. The Lindy became a collector's favourite, and Jypsière, a crossbody bag in the shape of a Birkin, proved to be loved by so many that it’s still in production to this date. The Kelly Danse came, but it was recently returned, and then the Kelly Cut replaced the Kelly Lounge.

Gaultier also sent extraordinary one-offs down the runway. Hermès scarves transformed into bag materials. Fur, suede, silk, metal studs, he quite literally used it all. The Mouton Shearling Teddy Kelly went from runway to production.

His Spring 2010 show featured a 30cm Himalayan Birkin on the runway, sparking the obsession that continues today. A 25cm Himalayan walked the following season. Collectors lost their minds.

Gaultier's Fall 2010 finale collection unveiled the So Black series, bags with black PVD hardware and matching black packaging. His Spring 2011 farewell show introduced the 15cm Micro Birkin (later featured in Christophe Lemaire's Candy Collection) and brought back the Picnic Kelly.

Hermès Still Remembers in 2025

In 2025, Hermès unveiled the Shoulder Birkin Light. Anyone who’s even remotely a fan of the house could automatically tell that it was a direct homage to Gaultier's original JPG design. It had the same hands-free design, and it was constructed to be a lot lighter than the classic Birkin.

It is worth noting here that we don’t really see this as nostalgia. In fact, we’d rather see it as Hermès acknowledging that Gaultier was right. The Jean Paul Gaultier handbag that once seemed too casual for the house has earned its place in the permanent collection.

What we love about Shoulder Birkin Light is that it’s proof that a good design rarely ever ages out. In fact, it only evolves. It gets lighter, more refined and suited to how we actually live our lives.

Gaultier's Gift That Keeps on Giving

Jean Paul Gaultier's seven years at Hermès changed the house forever.

It’s not easy going into a luxury house and completely shaking up their entire design and craftsmanship that’s been going on for two centuries. Yet, Jean Paul Gaultier managed to do just that.

He proved that playfulness and tradition could co-exist. Luxury didn’t require stiffness; in fact, it never really did.

The Jean Paul Gaultier Hermès collaboration gave us something special, a Birkin you could actually live with.

A beautiful, beautifully made bag that solved real problems whilst looking absolutely spectacular doing it.

That's the genius of the JPG Birkin bag. It didn't reject Hermès tradition; it liberated it.

And twenty years later, collectors are still trying to get their hands on it. That tells you everything you need to know.
