How Much Do Rolex Datejust Costs?

The Rolex Datejust is a timeless classic, admired for its design and craftsmanship. Retail prices start at $7,250 for the basic Oystersteel model, but factors like precious metals, bracelet style, and gemstone accents can drive the price higher. For instance, the famous White Rolesor Datejust 36 mm costs $8,500, while the Datejust 41 in White Rolesor is priced at $10,250. If you’re eyeing a brand-new Datejust, be prepared to spend between $8,000 to $15,000.

On the pre-owned market, prices vary greatly depending on factors like rarity, materials, and condition. You can find some models for under $5,000, but generally, 5-digit reference numbers range from $5,000 to $8,000. For example, the steel and gold model typically costs around $6,000 to $7,000, while newer models go for at least $7,000.

The recent 6-digit generation averages $10,000 to $12,000 for two-tone models. Keep in mind that pre-owned prices for current Datejust models are often close to retail, sometimes even higher, depending on demand. So, whether you’re investing in a brand-new or pre-owned Rolex Datejust, it’s a statement of luxury worth every penny.

Welcome to the world of the Rolex Datejust—where every detail captivates and intrigues.

Durable Waterproof Oyster Case

The Rolex Oyster case, introduced in 1926, marked a pivotal moment in watchmaking history as the first waterproof watch case.

Its development revolutionised the industry, bringing about a significant shift in the perception of wristwatches. Before this innovation, wristwatches were seen mainly as delicate fashion accessories primarily worn by women. However, with the advent of the Oyster case, they evolved into indispensable everyday items suitable for all genders.

The iconic Oyster case has been embedded within the essence of the Rolex Datejust since its inception. This enduring partnership underscores Rolex’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Noteworthy for more than just its water-resistant properties, the Oyster case is celebrated for its ability to safeguard the intricate inner mechanisms of the watch from the rigours of daily life.

Whether enduring the hustle and bustle of everyday wear or facing the challenges of physically demanding activities or professions, the Rolex Oyster case ensures durability, reliability, and longevity for the wearer’s timepiece.

Screw-Down Twinlock Crown

Once upon a time, there was a clever invention in the world of watchmaking called the Oyster case. The screw-down winding crown had a unique feature, which helped keep water away from the delicate parts inside. Over time, as technology advanced, a newer version of the Datejust watch came along, bringing with it something called the Twinlock crown.

This Twinlock crown was a bit different. It had two sets of rubber gaskets: one snugly tucked beneath the crown to seal it tightly against the case, keeping moisture at bay, and another inside the tube surrounding the winding stem, providing an extra layer of protection. It wasn’t flashy or dramatic, but it was an intelligent design.

Thanks to this innovation, Rolex watches could now easily withstand water and harsh conditions. Whether worn on land or beneath the waves, they remained steadfastly reliable. And so, the story of Rolex’s dedication to quality and durability continued quietly but confidently, ensuring that wearers could trust their timepieces in any situation.

Date Display at 3 o’clock

The Rolex Datejust pioneered as the world’s inaugural self-winding chronometer wristwatch with an automatic date-changing feature on its dial. However, in its early versions, the date-changing process wasn’t immediate. Unlike modern Rolex watches that seamlessly switch dates precisely at midnight, the early Datejust models transitioned gradually, similar to many other watches of that time.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that Rolex introduced an innovative mechanism, revolutionising Datejust’s date-changing functionality. This advancement enabled the Date to instantaneously jump to the new day at midnight, marking a significant leap in timekeeping technology. Today, this instantaneous date change remains one of Datejust’s most distinctive and defining features, underscoring Rolex’s ongoing dedication to innovation and precision in watchmaking.

Cyclops Magnification Lens on Crystal

In 1953, almost a decade after its debut, Rolex decided to give its Date just a little upgrade. They added something unique: a Cyclops magnification lens perched neatly on the crystal’s exterior. Placed right over the date window at 3 o’clock, this bubble-like lens made reading the Date a breeze. Back then, the Cyclops lens and the crystal were crafted from acrylic.

Fast forward to today, and Rolex has kept up with the times. The Cyclops lens, now part of scratch-resistant sapphire crystals, is made from synthetic sapphire. It’s a subtle change but speaks volumes about Rolex’s dedication to quality and innovation.

Automatic Movements in Datejust (Excluding Oysterquartz)

Aside from the quartz versions known as Oysterquartz models, what truly defines the Rolex Datejust is its dependable automatic movement. Rolex has consistently improved the self-winding mechanism inside Datejust, with each new model being better than the last. The latest version, the Caliber 3235, powers today’s modern 36mm and 41mm versions.

Interestingly, even the smallest models, like the 26mm Lady-Datejust, feature automatic winding movements. This means that no matter the size or gender, every Datejust watch is equipped with reliable automatic movement.
